Hands-on Training on “Bio-signal Acquisition and Analysis”
 October 11, 2021
 October 31, 2021

The global medical devices market size was valued at USD 423.8 billion in 2018 and is expected to reach USD 612.7 billion by 2025. Rising geriatric population, economic growth, growing prevalence of chronic conditions, increased access to healthcare facilities, rising healthcare expenditure, growth in surgical procedures, etc. are projected to boost the global medical devices market. With rapid advancement in Indian medical device industry, Indian companies are manufacturing different class of medical devices. The Medical Devices Rules 2017 effective from 01 January 2018, streamlined the rules and regulations concerned with different types of medical devices.

Biomedical Signal Analysis centers on the acquisition and processing of information bearing signals that emanate from living systems. These vital signals permit us to probe the state of the underlying biologic and physiologic structures and dynamics. Therefore, their interpretation has significant diagnostic value for clinicians and researchers. The possibility of measuring, analyzing and registering biomedical signals or variables related to peoples’ health, in real time and outside hospitals, has generated lot of research and technological developments. New technologies for the diagnosis and treatment can be developed using biomedical signals based on the feasibility of measuring continuously different variables as electrocardiographic signals, blood pressure, oxygen concentration, pulse or simply temperature.

The detected signals are commonly corrupted with noise. Often, the information cannot be readily extracted from the raw signal, which must be processed in order to yield useful results. Signals and systems engineering knowledge and, in particular, signal-processing expertise are therefore critical in all phases of signal collection and analysis. Biomedical engineers play a key role in the design and development of biomedical monitoring devices and systems that match advances in signal processing and instrumentation technologies with biomedical needs and requirements.

The bio-signals are the signal which are generated due to activities of different organs in the body such as Electrocardiogram (ECG) which is generated due to the functional activity of the heart. Other bio-signals are Electroencephalogram (EEG), Electromyogram (EMG) etc. The importance is that these Bio-signal provide the functional behaviour of the corresponding organ which have information about the functionality of the organs. The bio-signals have a common pattern in terms of correct functionality of the corresponding organ. It is need to be record and analyzed to find out abnormalities. The embedded system is the system which make an interface between recorded Bio-signal and the end user to interact with these signals in terms of calculations of different parameters etc. The designing of bio-signals amplifier plays important role in bio-signal analysis. As the Bio-signals are very low in amplitude (in micro/milli volts) and are not readily available, the designing part to acquired them is critical. The bio-amplifier is a differential amplifier for all bio-signals and different in terms of gain, filters etc. for different bio-signals. The Bio-signal amplifier to be covered in the workshop will be for Electromyogram (EMG).

One of the important steps in production and launch of medical devices in market is the knowledge of the bio-signal, their acquisition, embedded system, design and fabrication of bio-amplifiers, interfacing and analysis of different bio-signals for diseases prediction and assistance to the physicians. This trainings programme is practical oriented with stress on hands-on-practice implementation. The participants of these programme will be provided in-depth knowledge of basic instrumentation, designing, and analysis of bio-signals.
